The History of Halloween – or – What is Samhain?
What is the meaning of Jack-o-Lantern?

What is the meaning of Jack-o-Lantern?

Why do we carve out faces on pumpkins and why do we leave them out
during Samhain/Halloween? What does it symbolize? Would you use
a fake pumpkin and would using a painted pumpkin be just as good?
Does anyone know or would like to tell us the history of Jack-o-lanterns?

I learned this a while ago in grade school. The rumor is that jack o lanterns started in Ireland when children would carve little faces in turnips to care away the evil spirits. It carried over to other countries as pumpkins so they would be on a larger scale. The children would carry the little turnip lights like lanterns. It was a way to ward off evil.

I personally wouldn't use a fake pumpkin because it takes all the fun out of carving it. I love to open it and take all the pumpkin guts and seeds out : its so much fun. And i cook the seeds with salt in the oven (they are soo good) You could use a painted pumpkin but you don't get nearly the same effect as a carved pumpkin with a light in it (it is so eerie lloking)

I love love love Halloween! It is amazing. Happy pumpkin carving!
